Women And Drug Abuse
Women and drug abuse should not go hand in hand. Unfortunately, there are a disturbing number of women abusing drugs all over the world. Women abuse all kinds of drugs, just like men. From alcohol to crack marijuana to heroin, women of all ages and cultures are abusing all kinds of drugs.
There are serious health concerns revolving around drug abusing women. Many women who abuse drugs stop having menstruation cycles until they get clean (if they ever do). AIDS is the fourth leading cause of death among women. Women who abuse drugs risk getting infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, women who are having sex with a man who abuses drugs are at a great risk too. Over 70 percent of women who have aids got it from drug use or having sex with an infected partner.

Some other crucial worries for drug abusing women are pregnancy and prostitution. Women who abuse drugs often turn to prostitution to support their addiction. Women selling their bodies put themselves in dangerous situations, with the possibility of being raped, killed, or getting pregnant.  If a woman gets pregnant while she is abusing drugs, the fetus is in great danger. Many women are so addicted to the drug they are abusing that they are unable to quit their drug abuse by themselves. In this case, the woman may have a miscarriage; the baby may survive until birth and be born into the world addicted to heroin or cocaine, the baby may be born with fetal alcohol syndrome, and in worse case scenarios; women sometimes throw their babies into a dumpster or shake/choke the baby to death.

Some women may feel helpless or like they have lost hope or control of their lives. Women who abuse drugs do not have to face this problem alone. There are women’s shelters available 24/7 that any woman can go to for safety and resources. Any woman abusing drugs should seek help through cessation treatment, inpatient or outpatient rehab, therapy or twelve step programs. There are endless options of help for women abusing drugs. If a woman is pregnant while abusing drugs, the woman should desperately seek help from a treatment or cessation center. This is an emergency; an unborn fetus is a person. Therefore, this unborn person’s life is in danger. Please contact a treatment center immediately if you find out you are pregnant while abusing drugs. This is the only chance to give birth to a happy, healthy baby.

Even if a woman is prescribed drugs from their doctor, some prescription medications will have the same effect on pregnancy as illicit, illegal drugs like heroin or crack cocaine. Talk to your doctor if you are prescribed any kind of narcotic including anxiety medication like Xanax, Ativan or Valium, pain pills like Oxycontin, Vicodin, Hydrocodone, etc. Even though a doctor prescribes it, does not mean it is okay to abuse prescription medication. Women who abuse drugs are also addicted to the same drugs that a doctor would prescribe; the only difference is that they buy it on the street.
