What to look for in a drug rehab program
With so many different drug rehab programs currently available, its hard for people to determine which program will work best for their needs.
The most important thing to look for in a treatment program is location. Part of what makes withdrawal difficult is being close to an environment that makes a person want to use drugs or alcohol. Treatment programs located directly in a city where recovering addicts can see other addicts walking right by the front door can make the process incredibly difficult. This can add overstimulation to the person in recovery, and can trigger a want to go use.

By entering into a program that is secluded you increase the chances for success. This works best as an in-patient program, as out-patient allows an individual to go back to their current group of “friends” and other bad influences that trigger a desire to use. When a program is secluded even the worst of cravings can be negated due to the fact that the person has absolutely no idea where they are or where they’d go. This allows allows the staff of the treatment program enough time to get the person through their period of cravings and back to a point of willingness for change.

The period of physical cravings last a different amount of time depending on what drug a person is withdrawaling from. For example, physical cocaine cravings do not last as long as the cravings for heroin. A person withdrawaling from cocaine typically needs food, sleep, and stimulation to move past their withdrawal phase. A person withdrawaling from heroin on the other hand, needs to be physically comforted through this period. They’ll have difficulty sleeping as their body aches. By finding a treatment program that can address the needs of your individual situation, your chances for success increase dramatically.

After this period of withdrawal, drug residuals still exist inside the body. These need to be eliminated to prevent future cravings. What happens is these residuals are stored in the fatty tissues of the body. These can be re-introduced to the person, causing physical cravings and the potential for relapse. Once these residuals have been removed, an individual can begin working on the mental issues that caused them to want to use in the first place.

People use drugs for a variety of issues. Common issues include abuse, neglect, anxiety, and fear. Every person is different and has to come to terms with their individual causes for their drug use. By ident ing and addressing these issues at their core a person is able to move past them and move forward with their lives. Life skills and tools also must be learned for the person to be able to live a happy and healthy life.
