Treatment Bipolar Disorder
Treatment for bi-polar disorder can be approached in several different ways, or the treatment can consist of a combination of several different approaches that are all mixed together into a daily routine of effective treatment.
For example, prescription medication is the most common form of daily treatment for bi-polar disorder. Prescription medication treatment for bi-polar disorder does not seem to be enough to effectively treat and cure the symptoms of the disorder. A more effective approach would be a combination of a few of the following nurturing practices: cognitive behavioral therapy, exposure therapy, counseling, healthy lifestyle changes, keeping a daily journal, and most importantly; the patients participation in their own treatment and maintaining their own treatment everyday.

The first step towards treating bipolar disorder is recognizing the need for treatment and seeking help. The first thing that anyone should know during their journey of overcoming bipolar disorder is this: one form of treatment that works for someone else may not work for you. There may be a few rounds of trial and error but this should never get any hopes down, as there is certainly the perfect treatment or combination of treatments for each individuals needs for overcoming bipolar disorder. Everyone is unique and each person’s treatment for bi-polar disorder will be unique too.

The three main traditional foundations of treatment for bipolar disorder are medication, education, and psychotherapy. Sometimes, the traditional approach will not work. The medications that are prescribed for bipolar disorder can have adverse effects such as: causing a person to become suicidal, inducing manic or depressed episodes, uncomfortable mental and physical side effects, and the risk of addiction to these drugs which eventually leads to very uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms when use of the drug is discontinued. Medication is sometimes necessary for treating short term phases of extreme manic, manic depressed, hypo-manic, or mixed episodes but medication should only be used in dire situations. Education is indeed a huge role in the success of treatment for bipolar disorder. Going outside of the box and educating yourself about alternative treatments for bipolar disorder could be what leads you to finding the comfort and relief that you seek.

Psychotherapy, counseling and other forms of psychological therapy such as cognitive behavioral therapy are very important in helping the person who is suffering with the symptoms, side effects and instability of bipolar disorder. Psychotherapy will treat the person how to prevent major mood swings from happening through helping the person discover what triggers manic moods, mood swings, depressed moods and everything in between. The basis of treatment for bipolar disorder is examining what triggers the mood swings or manic episodes. A counselor may suggest that their patient keep a daily journal of their activities, the people the encounter, the places they go, what makes them sad, what makes them happy and what sends them into manic depressed or hyper manic episodes.

Through examining what triggers the extreme mood swings, the person can see that when they are experiencing an episode; they have lost control of their feelings and actions. Once the person realizes that they can gain back the control, the real progress starts. This is why some form of counseling is the most important part of episode prevention, self realization, and effective treatment for bipolar disorder.
