Believe it or not bulimia, anorexia, and binge eating can all be classified as anxiety disorders. While much of the disorders can be associated with a preoccupation with body shape and weight, can often times stem from traumatic experiences one suffered from in the past.
These traumatic experiences can include neglect, child abuse, peer pressure and family pressure.

A child who was neglected in favor of another child may believe this had something to do with the way they looked. Even at a healthy body weight they may believe that if they were only “skinnier” than they would finally receive the attention they deserve, thus causing one to start trying to lose weight. The neglect doesn’t have to come from one’s home, this could be a person they’re interested in school who overlooks them as well.

In terms of child abuse, the abused does not exactly know how to deal with their feelings as their caregiver is treating them in a negative manner. Without a caregiver available to take care of them, their anxieties come out in a variety of different ways. Having someone while you’re young to count on for guidance is essential to a healthy person.

Both family and peer pressure can also trigger a person to want to look or act a certain way. Some children are put under unnecessary stress to look a certain way to “fit in” while at school. Their parents may be trying to relive a part of their childhood that they felt as though they missed out on. Or perhaps the student’s peers all look a certain way, causing the child to want to look and act that same way. By having these additional pressures placed upon a person it can result in a variety of disorders and risky behaviors.

One who is suffering from an eating disorder may only be given information about how to move forward in their life without suffering from this disorder. The person diagnosing the illness may overlook exactly what first caused this behavior to surface, addressing secondary issues instead. Without treating the underlying cause of the disorders the behaviors can resurface and re-trigger.

Children who have a fear of going to school may also be suffering from an anxiety disorder. While much of this is shrugged off by the general population, the child is experiencing an overstimulation of stress and anxiety, which can cause serious issues for him in the future. This can lead to a misdiagnosis of what is going on with the individual later on in life, and until the root cause of his fear of school is addressed the individual will not be able to experience true relief.

For many their anxiety is either overlooked, dismissed, or misdiagnosed as something completely different. These individuals are put on medications to “handle” their anxiety, which leads to further use of medication and possible dependence. By addressing the root cause of anxiety and helping the person to overcome this, the individual is able to move on with their lives without the use of medications.
