Overcoming Panic Attacks
Overcoming panic attacks is something that must start within you. Overcoming panic attacks is far different that coping with panic attacks. Coping with panic attacks may include taking a benzodiazepine (Valium, Xanax, Ativan, Clonopin) by prescription from a doctor for panic attacks.
Overcoming panic attacks involves a lifestyle change. Overcoming panic attacks is much, much harder once someone has been taking a benzodiazepine and has become dependant upon it. Benzodiazepines are very addictive and once a person decides or wants to stop taking them, benzodiazepine withdrawal can be one of the most uncomfortable experiences a person can go through. This can be avoided easily by recognizing that there is a huge difference between overcoming a panic attack and coping with a panic attack. Overcoming anxiety attacks is a positive life change, rather than coping with panic attacks with an addictive and sedative drugs such as Xanax.
Once you have experienced panic attacks and confirmed with yourself and your loved ones that you are having panic attacks, you have to figure out all the exact reasons why you are having panic attacks. Reasons for having panic attacks are different for everyone, panic attacks mainly stem from fear and we are all afraid of something. Overcoming anxiety attacks means preparing yourself for situations that trigger panic attacks, and stopping the panic attacks before they even happen. Knowing yourself is first step and the most important step in overcoming panic attacks.
Knowing yourself means becoming more aware of yourself and realizing things about yourself that you didn’t even know. Accept yourself, don’t be too hard on yourself, love yourself, you have nothing to be afraid of. You can really get in touch with yourself by some form of meditation. Everyone meditates in their own way, you don’t have to close your eyes and sit perfectly still for an hour in order to meditate. Just relaxing, lying in your bed, giving yourself breaks and time alone to think and listening to what your inner thoughts are telling you is meditation. Practicing relaxing exercises before situations, places, people or things that trigger panic attacks is a huge forward motion towards overcoming panic attacks. Getting your body in synch with what you think, say and do is a very rewarding and confidence building practice that also aligns you with overcoming panic attacks.
The same relaxing practices won’t work for everyone so you have to find what works for you. The same common agenda for overcoming panic attacks seems to be knowing and understanding yourself, knowing your limits, knowing what is comfortable for you and what is not comfortable for you, but at the same time; pushing your limits and going outside of your box. Panic attacks can hold people back in life, and hold them back from doing things that they want to do but are afraid to do because they are afraid of having panic attacks.
Once you have learned some tools for overcoming panic attacks in situations that trigger panic attacks, and once you have realized that you can face these situations head on without having panic attacks, therefore realizing that there is nothing to be afraid of; you can try new things that you may normally avoid due to the fear of having panic attacks. At this point, you are overcoming your panic attacks rather than letting your panic attacks overcome you.
