The reasons that are underlying the symptoms of original pain may be treated with better efficiency when no opiate drugs are in the body, since naturally people eventually become tolerant to these drugs.

Side effects of Methadone are very broad, ranging from constipation to life-threatening changes in breathing. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Public Health Advisory on November 29, 2006 regarding Methadone; the FDA announced that using this drug for pain control may potentially result in life-threatening changes in heart beat and breathing or death. The advisory also revealed that the FDA had received reports of patients taking Methadone experiencing life-threatening side effects or death and urged physicians to be cautious when prescribing the medication. Use of this medication may cause shallow breathing and changes in heart beat that the patient may not feel or notice.

Mallinckrodt, the pharmaceutical company that makes Methadone, also advised a warning that some side effects are depression of breathing and blood flow, and death. There is an average of 11 deaths related to this medication each day in the U.S., it is the second killing drug in the U.S., and more individuals die from using it than heroin use. Methadone is a very commonly prescribed narcotic for opiate substitution and chronic pain management. Many users eventually want to stop taking it because of the dangers of side effects, including long-term side effects such as developing a physical dependency or Methadone addiction.

The most commonly experienced
opiate side effects of Methadone include dry mouth, dizziness, drowsiness, constipation, increased sweating, headache, weakness, feeling lightheaded, vomiting, feeling nauseous, and itchiness. Medical Methadone side effects help should be sought immediately if an individual taking this medication experiences any of these severe adverse effects: extreme confusion, excessive drowsiness, slow, fast, or irregular heartbeat; fainting, menstrual changes, hallucinations, seizures, severe dizziness, persisting lightheadedness, trouble urinating, trouble sleeping, loss of appetite, unusual bleeding or bruising, unusual mood changes (e.g., disorientation, agitation), shortness of breath, shallow or slow breathing, thrombus, swelling of the legs, feet, or arms; and severe allergic reactions: hives, rash, difficulty swallowing, difficulty breathing, itching, chest pain, or swelling or the face, mouth, lips, or tongue.

Methadone related deaths occur more frequently during the beginning of treatment; usually they are a cause of consuming excessive dose. Methadone overdose can be considered a potential side effect as most overdoses are unintentional (some are not) and often caused by a wrongly estimated tolerance. Methadone overdose symptoms include difficulty breathing, muscle spasticity, slow and labored breathing, no breathing (fatal after 2-4 hours), bluish lips and fingernails, bluish skin, pinpoint pupils, weak pulse, coma, low blood pressure and spasms of the stomach. Another major side effect of this medication is Methadone addiction or dependence; as this drug is an opiate and generally involves the spectrum of most other opioid side effects, which include the development of physical and psychological dependence and tolerance.

Some other common Methadone side effects include heat intolerance, chronic fatigue, exhaustion, sleepiness, hypoventilation, anorexia, weight gain, perspiration, flushing, blurred vision, and cardiac arrhythmia. These side effects can be uncomfortable, intrusive, addictive, unbearable, painful, life-threatening, or deadly. Not only are there all of the physical and mental side effects, some are annoying and some are fatal, but using this drug also will inevitably cause the user to develop a tolerance and dependency. If use is discontinued, a whole other slew of Methadone withdrawal side effects emerge. In fact, such withdrawal symptoms scare many users into continuing on with the uncomfortable side effects from taking methadone in order to avoid withdrawal. However, withdrawal and side effects are easily overcome with medical guidance and a slow tapering of Methadone from the system.
