Keys To A Great Drug Rehab Program
Selecting the right drug rehab program can be a difficult task to say the least, as there are so many different programs available for one to choose from. Different people are looking for different criteria within a program, but everyone is looking for the same outcome – a clean and sober life.
The most important criteria to look at when selecting a program is its location. If a person is too close to their old environment or a similar environment the withdrawal process is that much harder. Programs located within a city where individuals in recovery see people currently on drugs walk by the front door can make it close to impossible to succeed. Too much outside stimulation can also make the process that much more difficult for the person.

When a program is on the outskirts of a town or located up on a mountain top somewhere, the person’s chances for success increase dramatically. This is also why in-patient programs work better than out-patient programs. With out-patient programs the person in recovery returns to their environment every day after working on themselves. They can be negatively influenced by locations, people, stores, or anything else in their enivronment that reminds them of their former life. By entering into an in-patient program out in the middle of nowhere most cravings can be handled by the program staff. Even if a person wants to leave, he has no idea where he is or how to get to where he wants to go. This allows the staff enough time to get the person through this dark period and on their way to change.

When it comes to physical cravings and withdrawal the amount of time required will vary depending on drug type, drug volume, and length of time. In most cases, the withdrawal period from cocaine is nowhere near the withdrawal time from heroin. A person has been using cocaine will require sleep, food, and something to keep their mind and body occupied during this period of withdrawal. A person coming off of heroin, however, will have difficulty eating and sleeping. Their body will be in physical pain and will require constant attention and focus to get them through this process. By finding a program that can address you’re individual needs also increases the chance for success.

When a person has finished with their initial withdrawal period, the toxins and residues still existing in the body need to be removed. Drug toxins store themselves in the fatty tissues of the body, causing cravings when released back into the body. These cravings can cause a person to relapse. By removing these toxins from the body, the individual can then begin working on their mental and emotional issues that brought them to use substances in the first place.

Finding the core issues that lead to the use of substances is key to a successful recovery. Some may be suffering from abuse issues, others neglect, anxiety or even fear. Each person has been through something different in their life and to move forward these root causes need to be identified and resolved. Once their issues have been resolved a person simply needs to learn additional coping mechanisms to remain a drug free and happy member of society.
