There are many ways you can help yourself to live happily with bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder is a broadly diagnosed disorder and most people who have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder do not need to take prescription medications such as antidepressants, mood stabilizers, etc.
Becoming aware that you have bipolar disorder is the first step to help yourself maintain bipolar moods. For someone who wants help, they should become educated about bi-polar disorders.
Since bi-polar disorder basically shifts a person’s moods back and forth from one polar opposite to the other, you can keep a journal of anytime your mood shifted to mania or depression. After keeping a bi-polar help journal and documenting the times and places when your mood shifted; you can start to look at the patterns of what is triggering your mood changes. To become in control of your mood, becoming aware of what may trigger your mood changes will help a great deal in preventing extreme mood swings. Not everyone can maintain the same mood all of the time, and this is understandable with the stress of everyday life. For people who are suffering with the symptoms of bi-polar mood disorders, you can help yourself by knowing that you are in control of your mood.
Instead of unconsciously letting bi-polar disorder take over your moods, become conscious of what it feels like when a mood swing is coming on. If you are feeling depressed; not wanting to be around people, not caring about yourself, not caring about anyone else, sleeping all day, you are starting to experience a depressed state of bi-polar mood disorder. If you are feeling uncontrollably excited, unusually happy, talking faster than usual, having a hard time concentrating, feeling restless, having a hard time sleeping, you are starting to experience a manic state of bi-polar disorder. Usually, these changes in mood can take over the whole mind and can last for weeks or months.
You are in control of this, when you become aware of it, you can do something about it. Help yourself conquer bi-polar mood swings by preventing them. Create a plan for times when your mood starts to overwhelm you. Recognize the triggers that bring these moods on. Common triggers include: stress, work, school, family, friends, and the way you are taking care of your body. Eliminating chemicals like alcohol, caffeine, unhealthy food, and replacing them with supplements, vitamins, whole and healthy foods, exercise, yoga, and relaxation will help minimize bi-polar mood swings. The idea for bi-polar help is to balance everything out, you don’t want to be too high nor too low, somewhere comfortably in the middle.
If you are feeling manic, go for a calming walk or bike ride, clear your mind, or talk to a counselor or trusted friend. If you are feeling low and depressed, do something that makes you happy to cheer you up, balance your thoughts out and look on the bright side. If you start to feel manic or depressed, bring yourself out of it before it is extreme. Avoid triggers, have hope, be patient, and let other in to help you with bi-polar disorder. Although it is up to you, seeking help through a counselor that you can speak your mind to every week is a huge help for bi-polar disorder.
